OLYMPIC GAMES
WHAT ARE THE OLYMPIC GAMES?
The
Olympic Games are the most important international sport competitions. In these
competitions thousands of athletes of all over the world participate in a
variety of competitions. The last event was in London on 2012. In these games
participates 204 countries, in 39 disciplines.
Actuality,
International Olympic Committee is the institution that oversees and manages
everything about the Olympics.
WHICH IS THE ORIGIN OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES?
These
games born in Greece and was a religious festival created in order to honor Zeus.
The first Olympiad was done on 776 B.C. and according to the legend Hercules
created these competitions. These games were made in Olympia City and the men
were naked, the women could not participate in this competition.
WHAT DOES OLYMPIC SYMBOLS
REPRESENT?

OLYMPIC
RINGS: It is the principal symbol of the Olympics.
This symbol is compound by 5 rings intertwined with colors: Blue, black, red,
yellow, and green. These drawings represent the five continents of the world,
and the colors represent the colors that each country has in its flags.

OLYMPIC
TORCH: The Olympic torch is a flame that represents
the beginning of the Olympic Games. The
flame is burning every four years in the opening ceremony in the Hera’s temple,
Greece. After, many athletes take this torch for through the world until
arrived to the host country. This flame
represents the purity and clarity along the time.

OLYMPIC
FLAG: The flag has the Olympic rings on with a white
background.

OLYMPIC
MEDALS: The
Olympic medals are given to the best athletes of each sport categories. The
award for the first place is a gold medal, for the second place is the silver
medal. And for the third place is the bronze medal. The medals have a circular
shape, and in front of it is the goddess Nike of Athens.
WHICH HAS BEEN COLOMBIA‘S
ROLE IN THE OLYMPIC GAMES?
Colombia
inaugurated the Olympic Games on 1932, in The Angeles Olympics. Colombia has
always participated in all competitions except on 1952, in the Helsinki Olympics.
Colombia is the third country in South America after Brazil and Argentina. Through
Olympic History, Colombia has stand out in cycling, boxing and weightlifting.
Again, Colombia has gotten medals in athletics, shooting, wrestling, judo,
taekwondo and BMX.
Colombia
has gotten 2 gold medals. The first medal was gotten by Maria Isabel Urrutia on
2000, in the Sidney Games; her discipline: Weigh – Lifting. The second was gotten
by Mariana Pajon on 2012, in the London Games. Her discipline: BMX: Bicycle
Moto Cross.
